Kelp Resources
A kelp farm allows a large number of plants to be grown in a small area. Harvesting plants in the wild would require traveling considerable distances to find the right species and quality of plant. Removing large quantities of seaweed growing naturally along a shore can upset the balance of plant and animal communities.
Also, when flung on the shore by the sea, seaweed is not suitable for nutritional or medicinal purposes as the soaking of detached plants in sea-water causes nutrients to be lost.
How are they harvested?
At a kelp farm, the plants do not drift away as they do in open waters of the ocean. They are grown around a rope that is anchored to the sea floor.
On the farm used for Vita-Kelp products, the kelp is handpicked when ready for harvesting. Careful techniques are used that do not harm the plant, or damage the local ecosystem.
Certain tissues in the fronds (or leaves) of the kelp contain the highest concentration of Omega-3 and 6 oils. These are selected by manually cutting around them. It is this part that is used for Omega Premium Kelp capsules.
Some of the vegetative blade is also taken, as this also contains essential vitamins and minerals. Less than 40 per cent of the plant is used.
Drying and Grinding
After the kelp is harvested, the cut pieces are taken to a drying shed. Under intense heat, they are dried for 48 hours. This helps preserve the quality and nutrients of this natural seafood.
After it is dried, the kelp is then ground into powder. A special grinding machine is used that preserves the nutrients. Conventional grinders, with their intense heat, can contribute to loss of vitamins and minerals.
The powder is thoroughly tested for pollutants, contaminants, and bacteria. After testing, the powder is enclosed in a sugar-free gel form. This process is called encapsulation.
